Building AVs for All

2022 - San Francisco, Panel at TechCrunch's Mobility 2022

Panel moderated by Kirsten Korosec
Panelists: Summer Fowler, Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer, Argo AI; Riccardo Giraldi, Senior Director of Experience, Zoox; Alisyn Malek, Executive Director, Coalition for Reimagined Mobility

Will robotaxis, self-driving trucks and delivery bots be good citizens in the cities in which they operate? And what does a “good AV citizen” even look like?

We’ve invited three experts to our stage to sift through this complex subject and talk about how design, the vehicle’s self-driving system and a developer’s approach to operations can affect the accessibility, equity, safety and usability of AVs.

This panel discussion will explore issues such as inclusive product design for physical accessibility and operational equity to ensure that both private and public AVs are available in all communities.

Good AV citizenship also means a vehicle that safely interacts with the cyclists, pedestrians and human-driven cars it will encounter every day.

The Evolution of our Relationship with Technology

2017 - Calgary, Canada at CAMP Festival

We are on the verge of a technology awakening that will change what it means to be human.
As humans we have hacked the world around us using its materials in new ways to help improve our lives. From using dumb and predictable objects that helped us solve our primary needs to crafting more advanced tools that help us solve the same problems more efficiently and solve higher needs. But the more advanced tools tend to me more complex, less predictable, requiring feedback, states, and advanced user interfaces to help reduce the time between our intentions and actions.

With the industrial revolution, our relationship with technology changed, accepting that machines can outperform us physically. With the introduction of computers, we accepted that machines can outperform our minds. We are now at the point where our technological solutions are becoming more aware, independent, and capable of making decisions in complex situations without specific instructions. In this new scenario, we are at the verge of a new phase of human computer interaction.

This is a moment where we are not just using technology but rather collaborating with it, and that requires teaching technology how to become human literate to successfully make decisions on our behalf.
